One of the most common queries inputted into Google is the question, “Is Skydiving Safe?” As a skydiving center, we think this is an excellent question to ask and we wish to address it head on.
Firstly, let’s talk about the real question at hand. Can you be killed skydiving? The answer is yes. There is risk involved with skydiving. No matter what we do in life, there is an element of risk whether getting on a motorcycle, driving in a car, playing soccer or SCUBA diving. While exiting an airplane seems like a higher risk quotient than all others, it’s not as great as you may think.
In 2014, the United States Parachute Association (USPA) recorded 24 skydiving fatalities in the U.S. out of approximately 3.2 million jumps. That’s 0.0075 fatalities per 1,000 jumps-among the lowest rate in the sport’s history! Tandem skydiving has an even better safety record, with 0.003 student fatalities per 1,000 tandem jumps over the past decade.
Each year, approximately 51 people are killed by lightning strikes in the US alone. Though the statistics don’t align perfectly as there are many more people in the US who are outdoors in inclement weather, the point is that statistically, skydiving fatalities are a rare occurrence.
Over the decades, the average number of fatalities have been steadily decreasing and is nearly half of what it was during the 1970s due to the advancement in skydiving gear and technology.
